1984 Blog #3 pg 127-167

Winston and Julia are starting a whole new level in their relationship. Winston, beginning at the workplace, gets jealous of another man sitting next to Julia in the lounge. But this contradicts the fact that Winston does not even call her by her full name yet. He calls her “girl” maybe because he knows that the further the two of them get in their relationship the more they will feel resulting in more ways the thought police can catch or turn them in. The readers can foreshadow from Winston’s own thought about Julia are forming from a small spark to a burning flame of desire for each other.

Having the government that the live in, Julia and Winston have never experienced something like this before. The attraction they have for each other is not expressed with physical appearance but just with mental looks. The two of them can almost feel what the other is thinking just by a glance.

The first time the two meet up to discuss the next time they will get alone time their hands touch. These seconds of physical touch bring them closer than they ever have been. In the book you could almost describe this moment as the “ice breaker” in their relationship. This “ice breaker” leaves Winston wanting more and more after they depart. He cannot wait to see her again when they are alone. The reader can infer that something huge is about to happen between the two of them.

He learned “every part of her hand” just by holding it for those mere ten seconds. Instead of love at first sight it may be described as love at first touch. Enthralled by her every movement, Winston just cannot stop thinking about their next meeting and what will happen next. When Winston in the book looks forward to the next meeting with Julia neither can the readers making this point in the book suspenseful and thrilling.
