1984 Blog#2

The mysterious antique shop that intrigued Winston so much is not all it is cracked up to be. This shop is where Winston first found his diary he keeps his log in and somehow his body led him to the exact spot again. Something drew him there and you can infer that he will be back there again.
When first entering the antique shop, Winston finds a pink coral paper weight. Not knowing anything about its importance he buys it from the shop owner for 4 dollars. The owner explains that a long time ago the item would have been worth thousands. The coral does not pose any importance later in the book but it may appear again. This may be the item that gets Winston in trouble later in the book if he ever gets caught.
While speaking to the shop owner he sees that Winston is fascinated with all the antiques in the store. Winston becomes enthralled with anything and everything inside and wonders and questioned where its origin came from. Anyways, the cashier decides to bring Winston upstairs to where older and better antiques are for Winston. Upstairs is where the cashier used to live. There was a bed and suitable living arrangements except for the fact nobody had been up there in years because of the risk of getting caught. The man described the bed full of “bugs.” This did not seem to pass Winston as he was searching for anything. Taking into consideration the relationship between Winston and Julia, this “bedroom” may come back to haunt them. It may become a hideaway or maybe even a meeting place.
Suddenly, Winston finds a picture on the wall, but wonders why it is bolted to the wall. The antique owner says the painting is of a church, which brings Winston back to the song about St. Clemons and other churches he could not remember because of his memory slowly being erased. The readers should think about why the painting is “screwed” or “bolted” to the wall. Maybe there is something behind it or maybe it is a telescreen!
Winston likes the room so much he tells the owner that he would even consider renting it out. This statement that he states emphasizes that Winston is slowly gaining his individuality and freedom.
This room that we can infer that Winston will return to may or may not be good or bad. We will find out later from reading and see.
