"The Story of An Hour"- Short Story Blog

“The Story of An Hour” was written by a woman named Kate Chopin who is well- known for her use of creative foreshadowing in her stories. The ending to “The Story of An Hour” twists and takes a dramatic turn with the character Mrs. Mallard. Chopin uses foreshadowing towards Mrs. Mallard to hint to the readers that the ending is not going to be what is expected.
“Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble” the other characters in the short story act with sympathy towards her not knowing what her life was like with Mr. Mallard. That first line in the story foreshadows that Mrs. Mallard does not have a physical heart disease but an emotional heart disease that has been caused by her husband. Heart disease is never just heart disease and Chopin proves that.
When Mrs. Mallard leaves to be with herself to think in her room she takes in the sites and feelings from her open window including the rain. “The delicious breath of rain was in the air” when she sat in her chair. In How to Read like a Professor rain symbolizes a new life or beginning. Kate Chopin writes about rain foreshadow another point in her story. The rain symbolizes a new life for Mrs. Mallard without Mr. Mallard in a good way for her. But the surprising twist ending displays that the new life for Mrs. Mallard was death.
Another line of foreshadowing is the line “There would be no one to live for during those years; she would live for herself.” The word “live” is used twice to make the reader think Mrs. Mallard actually is going to have a new life to live with herself that is going to be better than her one before. But the ironic twist along with it is that she won’t be living when she hears she will not be getting a new life without Mr. Mallard but yet she Mr. Mallard will be getting a new life without her.
